Big Foot

(Updated 12/27/05)

For his 2002 trip around the world, Carl Hunter, took an interesting and innovative approach to vehicle preparation. He took a 4WD Mitsubishi Fuso truck and bolted a Big Foot series 1500 trailer to the back. The trailer was stock except for having the axle removed and wheel wells covered over with fiberglass.

The combination of truck and camper proved to be not only cost-effective but extremely tough and reliable. Carl reported that he didn't have any breakdowns whatsoever during his trip, not even a flat tire! (The Mitsubishi FG 4WD comes equipped with Yokohama heavy-duty 10-ply steel belted tires with a fairly aggressive tread. Overall tire performance was excellent.) This is no easy feat given some of the roads that he had to traverse during his trip. The Mitsubishi Fuso seems to be one of the few options available in North America to those who wish to embark in such journey on a vehicle for which parts would be widely available outside the United States and Canada.

The following pages contain some pictures and caption showing the transformation of camper and truck into expedition vehicle. To read more about Carl's adventure visit Carl's page in the Travelvans page or the Silk Route Motorcaravan Club China 2002 page.
